What’s covered by a habitation check and what’s not?
Habitation checks are an inspection of the living quarters of your motorhome, caravan or leisure vehicle, making sure that it’s safe to live in.
The annual checks are essential for safety and protection. Habitation checks are also required to keep your warranty valid and ensure that your vehicle is in its best condition.
At HabCheck, we understand that habitation checks can be confusing to those who are new to motorhomes.
To make things easier, we’ve created this guide to what’s covered and what’s not covered in a habitation check.
What’s covered in a habitation check?
Habitation checks usually take around three hours to complete and include:
Damp check. Using specialist equipment, we check for damp ingress in your motorhome. It’s incredibly important that any damp issues are spotted as quickly as possible, to stop them becoming costly problems.
Gas systems check. This tests for any dangerous and potentially lethal gas problems, including hose age and condition, leakages and gas appliance testing.
Ventilation checks. This checks the ventilation of your motorhome through any ventilation sources that you have.
Fire safety. This is a full and thorough test of all fire and safety measures in your motorhome, including smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, emergency exits, fire extinguishers and fire blankets.
Electricity check. This ensures that all your electrical systems are working correctly with no issues, including charging circuits operation, battery condition, lighting and sockets, fuses, circuit breakers and RCDS.
Windows and Doors. This inspects, tests and lubricates all locks, making sure all the windows, doors and internal appliances are safe to operate.
Visual inspection. This includes a visual inspection of your motorhome, including all fixtures and fittings, as well as add-on items such as air conditioning, cycle racks, ladders, satellite systems and internal appliances.
At the end of a habitation check, you’ll receive a pass/fail certificate with a detailed report of the condition of your vehicle, including advisory items that may need to be addressed.
What’s not included in a habitation check?
A habitation check simply inspects whether your motorhome is safe to live in. It does not include:
Simply put, a habitation check is an MOT for your motorhome.
However, instead of checking the engine and mechanical condition of your vehicle, habitation checks just focus on the living quarters.
At HabCheck, we don’t carry out any of the repairs.
