When you’ve invested a pretty penny into your motorhome, it’s wise to try and keep it in the best condition.
Over time, problems within your motorhome can start to develop.
From damp patches and gas leaks to problems with the water systems, your motorhome is susceptible to an array of different problems and safety violations that you may not always be aware of.
In order to keep your motorhome in tip-top condition, plus safe to live in, a habitation check can be carried out.
What is a habitation check?
A habitation check is the motorhome equivalent to a car’s MOT.
It assesses the aspects of the motorhome that are used for living, such as LPG, water and electricity.
These items can cause safety issues if not checked periodically and can usually be part of your motorhome’s warranty.
A lot of the problems that habitation checks address are ones that are the most common, yet difficult to identify.
If caught in enough time, many of these problems can be easily fixed and solved, saving you a lot of money in the process.
Here are the top motorhome problems that a habitation check will address:
Damp
It’s no exaggeration to say that damp is one of the worst things that can happen to your motorhome.
A caravan or motorhome is no different to a house, and damp conditions can lead to mould or mildew forming.
As well as having an unpleasant appearance and making you feel less comfortable, there are some serious health implications related to damp.
A habitation check examines for damp and will help detect and protect your motorhome from it by using moisture meters to check damp levels.
Gas Leaks
Today’s caravans and motorhomes are typically fitted with a full suite of home-quality gas appliances.
Of course, when using gas (LPG or otherwise) in a small, enclosed space like a caravan or camper, safety is of paramount importance.
All your gas appliances should have been tested when they were installed, and each should have been checked for safety the last time it was serviced, but how long ago was that?
In order to minimise the risk to you and your family when actually using your caravan, you should have it gas checked at least once a year, even if your insurance doesn’t require it.
A habitation check will test your gas system to see if everything is running safely, and includes checks such as a full ventilation and air inlet check and checking the flue for smoke spillage.
Electrical Faults
Undetected electrical problems can cause real safety concerns. From potential fire hazards to the danger of electrocution a habitation check can help prevent the worst from happening and dodgy electrics from damaging your motorhome.
The electrics are one of the most important aspects of your motorhome and they’ll cost a lot more than you might expect to get fixed.
Water Systems
Having a fault in your water system can be disastrous for your motorhome. Leaks can cause often unrepairable damage or costly restoration. Problems with water systems can also inevitably cause your motorhome to become cold and wet, leading to other problems such as damp and poor ventilation.
At HabCheck we offer a reliable and impartial check that you can trust. So, if you’re fearful that your motorhome may be at risk of any of the above problems and want to keep your motorhome in the best condition be sure to book your habitation check today.
